Oh yeah, double in-joke!
First, it's a nod towards the Ark of the Covenant line from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but it's also a reference that goes waaaaay back to issue 2 and 3 of the small press run of Dressed For Success. And it's another of those things we've had in our heads to throw in since the Star of Egress first appeared, one of those little elements of the greater galactic history, a relic of long ago, during the Cola Wars.
There is another connection between this story and those early stories, the supporting characters. In This Star and Dee Mpyr Striix Bagk, we meet Oki Wan Doki, a 'strange old hermit' that happens to look much like an actor turned president. In the current story we meet, well, actually we haven't met them yet, not fully. In fact, Jeff just drew the scene where they are revealed. But there's another celebrity character. On the surface, it's a fun excuse to draw celebrity caricatures and put them in our story. But there's more to it, and oh, I wish I could just spill it all. We actually discussed a change to the story this week that we had to let go because it would have required a lot more explanation that we didn't want to cram into the story. (See, we're trying not to bog it down any more than need be!) Perhaps we'll hint at it in the Who's Wha? entry when the character is revealed. Or maybe some notes in the trade once this story is collected. The point is there is a reason these familiar faces are here.
For now, all you need to know is that crystal thing has some history with our boys. If you'd like to find out more, the first 13 issues of the small press run are always available in The Dirty Baker's Dozen collection.
The other little note about this and the previous couple pages is, yes, I was tempted to go crazy with little easter eggs on book titles and such, but it was already taking a long time to colour all this stuff, and I think that stuff can be fun initially, but eventually it's distracting and kinda draws the focus off the scene and on to the Where's Waldo game of finding all the funny or hidden stuff in the backgrounds. But I was tempted as a way of doing a bunch of plugs for friends and people we admire. I might have another option for that coming though.
Oh it's a week for cryptic notes.

I like the connection with the small press books!

Thanks! We hope that eventually, it will all just be Dressed For Success, but for now there’s till kinda that divide between the old small press stories and the new web material. Maybe once we’ve got them all in book form it will be only a matter of the early black and white stories and the newer colour stuff.
But if anyone was gonna get the connection and mention it, it’d be you Tom.

Hey – do you guys have suggested listening music for this story? I recall my request for RUSH in the earlier days (which you met)!
Chris
Y’know, I’ve been not only thinking about that, but was actually listening to some DFS music and trying to figure out how we could bring that aspect in. I know a while back there was a discussion in the comments about the obvious stuff like the John Williams Indy soundtracks and music from Fletch. (We’ve all made that connection by now right? I’m not spoiling anything?)
But yeah, I do miss some of the little fun things we’d do in the small print, (look at the bottom of the page though, we’re still cracking wise) like the suggested listening music. So how ’bout this at least, should the day ever come that DFS becomes a movie/tv show or whatever, this has, at least in our minds, always been the theme music.

Umm… I just realized that I am becoming a bit like “Mel” from Flight of the Conchords.
