Dressed For Success Page 38

Dressed For Success is a light hearted, loosely science fiction buddy road movie comic. We do it for fun. We do it for laughs, mucking about in other peoples worlds, styles and genres with Alex and Walter. But if you scratch at the surface a bit, there is a bit of meat under that skin. (eww...) The Universe of DFS is an open sandbox where we can do whatever we want, without being tied to any set time or place. It is not however, without a history or greater design. Since very early on, we've been lacing our stories with little nuggets about what the greater world of DFS is like. That seemingly ordinary if somewhat silly can of pop is a good example. We introduced Copsi and the other flavours like Sprite-Up waaay back in issue 9 of the mini-comic. It was a throw away mention, a background prop. But it helps define the world that Alex and Walter live in. Mississauga Jay and the Lost Shrine of the Osars is the first time we've started to bring some of this greater back-story to the forefront of our tale. It's a delicate balance. When we first watched Star Wars back in the 70's, it was full of little hints at a more complex story, a history, that fed the tale. Mentions of a senate, the Spice Mines of Kessel, and the Clone Wars made our imaginations hum. Of course now, all that stuff has been explored ad nauseum and we can all debate whether we are better for it or not. But I can understand the desire to do so. As a creator, you daydream all this stuff about your world. You've done all this work building this elaborate construction. It seems a waste not to share it all. But we're going to try and find a balance. Explore just enough to serve the story we are telling, without forcing people to read a history or geography text book. Besides, the less we put in print, the less we're held to one specific set of fact, and playing fast and loose suits us. For now, ponder Copsi, the only choice for a new generation. We've taken our first step into a much larger world. - Chris

  1. I love the “Don’t hurt me!” look in panel four.

Now where are the cookies and/or pie!?

  2. Sorry, just a not so frosty beverage. But you were in the right ballpark of it being ‘food’. Send us an email with your mailing address and I’m sure we can find something fun to put stamps on.

  3. Hmmm… frosty beverage… *heads for the fridge to see if there’s any Guinness left*

    Ah, breakfast of champions!

Oh, by the way, in the first panel there is Mississauga Jay wearing capris?

I’ll send the e-mail as soon as I remember where the hell I am right now, I hate mondays…

  4. I realllly like your speech about cospi, it gives the page a deep resonance

    1. But is it also cold and refreshing?

  5. Alice, was that a typo, or do you really dislike soft drinks?

  6. It’s obvious people! Coke is gonna take over Pepsi in the near future! Coke Rules! Well, this is off course just my opinion..hehehehehe….

    1. I myself am a Coke addict. But in the Cola Wars, no one wins. NO ONE.
