Transcript for Dressed for Success comic by Chris Howard & Jeff Wasson

Panel 1: It is dark and nothing can be seen. The characters are in black silhouettes.

ALEX:
It looked bigger from the outside.

Panel 2: The Tenderizer’s hands can be seen to pull open a curtain.  A bright, blinding light can be seen from the centre as it widens.

TENDERIZER:
Through here.

Panel 3: Alex and Walter are seen stepping out of the dark and into an interior room. Their arms are raised to their faces to protect them from the bright light to adjust their eyes.

Panel 4: Wardrobe interior: A hexagonal shaped control console is seen in the middle of the room. It is a mix of various buttons, levers and screens with power core in the middle made up of tubes. The console is surrounded by bookcases and wooden shelving units, files with cardboard filing boxes and canned jars of preservatives. A hammock is seen in the background. There is a cat on the floor beside a litter box.

ALEX:
This isn’t an improvement.

WALTER:?(looking and pointing back and forward)
Are we-
We were-
Where are we?

Panel 5: A tall figure pokes his head around from behind the power core at the control console and speaks to Alex and Walter.

PHILIP:
Oh, you’re here!!
Hello.

I couldn’t help noticing that you seemed to need some help again.

Panel 6: He extends a hand with something in it.

PHILIP:
Tic-tac?

Panel 7: Alex and Walter look at their host in puzzlement.

WALTER:
Wait …Philip? from the spaceport?  Is that you?

Now that we're through the wardrobe, we can reveal, not Narnia and Mr. Tumnus, but Philip, a character Alex and Walter first encountered way back in issue 13 of the minicomics run. We also get to see what was actually inside the wardrobe.

When you decide to do a Doctor Who parody, the Doctor's Tardis, his time and space ship, is going to be one of the things you get to play with. Instead of a Police Call box from England, we went with a wardrobe. We put our own spin on the iconic line about the inside being larger than the outside expressed by every new person to enter, and we got to design our own interior. Like many aspects of DFS, the interior contains a number of inside jokes that are just for us or a small number of close associates.

If you want to refresh yourself on Philip's first appearance, you can read issue 13. He also pops up as a dream character in Issue 19

  1. A wardrobe – so, both Dr. Who and Narnia?

    1. Well…
We knew we didn’t want a police box, so something else bland, yet totally out of place in a science fiction setting. And the Narnia fakeout…
